"Frischluft schnuppern" - A breath of fresh air

The objective of the project was the demonstration of possibilities for increasing the air quality in schools.

Therefore, measurements at the music school Ferdinandeum in Graz took place. Additionally, workshops and informational material on good ventilation, e.g. periodical opening of the windows or the use of an automatic ventilation system, which enables used air to be sufficiently replaced by fresh air, were prepared.

Specific measures took place in school year 2010/2011 in two similar classrooms. Both rooms were equipped with air parameter measurement devices (CO2, humidity and temperature) and one decentral ventilation system was installed in one room.

The results showed a clear advantage of the ventilation system; the CO2 – concentration in the room without the system was about 50% higher, although the windows were opened periodically. This indicated that by only opening the windows, the used air is not replaced sufficiently and that a ventilation system is crucial for a good air quality. Therefore, the Energy Agency Styria recommended the installation of such ventilation systems for school buildings.
